How does it work?

In hypnotherapy the therapist will induce a hypnotic state during which the client remains conscious but receives and accepts suggestions more readily than usual, and acts on them more profoundly. While in a hypnotic state the client is very relaxed and this allows the powerful sub conscious mind to be accessed. The hypnotic state is entirely natural, comfortable and relaxing. Whilst in a hypnotic state you remain fully aware, in control, and you cannot be made to do anything you do not want to.

If you are not sure if the sub conscious mind exists think about this-have you ever had a "nagging feeling" that you had forgotten to do something? Your conscious mind did not know what it was but something was "telling" you and then minutes or even hours later your conscious mind knows and you remember what it was-that's your sub conscious mind working for you. Also have you ever driven on a long journey and arrived with no conscious memory of passing through certain towns or changing motorways. That's your subconscious mind taking over the navigation while your conscious mind was "daydreaming".

Your subconscious mind serves as a huge memory bank, it regulates the involuntary functions of the body, it is the seat of your emotions, it is where your imagination is, it manages the habitual behaviour you carry out and it directs our mental energy.

Sometimes early experiences are imprinted on the subconscious mind. Without any subsequent need for conscious thought, behaviours and habits formed as a result of these early experiences are controlled by the subconscious mind. Often these behaviours and habits are no longer appropriate or necessary but until the subconscious mind is given a new "blueprint" it will continue with this habitual pattern of response irrespective of what we consciously want.

While the client is in a deeply relaxed state various therapies can be used to bring about the changes in behaviour that you want. These therapies include Gestalt therapy, Analytical Hypnotherapy, Parts therapy, EMDR.
